Living, learning & talking about it
Everyday life, global journalism, the internet, fake news and other kinds of fiction
In case you wonder how the photo relates to the text below, so do I: I was walking around the NYU campus area in New York one Saturday, when this guy appeared — four others helped him push the grand piano into the middle of Washington Sq. Then he started playing. My daughter and I hung out for a while…the image and the idea never left me. After all, what´s a city for, if not for playing Rachmaninov outside on a brisk Saturday morning in October?
Welcome to World Learning here on Substack. I am a former journalist, now professor of media studies, professor of journalism studies.
Not sure yet how this page is going to unfold, but a key interest for me is the complex of issues that relate to the digital transformation of society, “big tech”, concerns with civil society, participatory democracy, freedom - and the role of the Internet in that context. And I like to travel, to walk, to meet people. Jazz and opera, too. Then the usual mix of Cohen, Dylan, Springsteen, Young.
Sign up here if you want to explore with me for a while. We will go to Lake Victoria and the Blue Nile in Uganda, Lake Tahoe in Northern California, the mountain trails in Iceland, and the coffee shops in Silicon Valley before we anchor up at the Blue Note in New York. Or my cabin, somewhere in Scandinavia.
And, tell your friends!
